“Basurero: ‘Kung Hei Batchoy’”

“Basurero: ‘Kung Hei Batchoy’”
Hosted and written by: Jay Taruc
Directed by: Raymond Generoso
Characters:
·       Jennifer – one of the persons who eats food from waste (scavenger).
·       Jessie – one of the 500 “tambakeros” in Tondo Manila.
·       Jr – he died in the garbage place in Tondo Manila because he was crushed by bulldozer.
Synopsis:
“Basurero” deals with one of the social problems in the Philippines – garbage. This story gave a picture in mind of the different ways of living of “basureros or scavengers” – people who live off garbage. The first case was a family who lives in an overpass in Cubao. They are called “magbabatchoy” or a person who collects and eats waste. They look for food in the trash – usually from fast food restaurants. They were asking permission from the guard if they could overlooked at their garbage. They were struggling for the leftovers of the customers such as: “buto-buto”, leftover fishes or vegetables, and others, which they re-cook when they got home. But sometimes they eat it on the spot.
One of these persons is Jennifer. She and her family were waiting for the waiter to put their garbage outside so that they could overlook it. They are doing it at night so that they would not be recognized. She was doing this just something to have something to eat. They are heating this food so that the germs will be killed. They have a house in Marinduque but they don’t have food to eat there. For most people it is garbage, but for them it is something that sustains their family.
The night they covered that segment, “mambabatchoy” tend to dare Jay Taruc. They prepared a plateful of leftovers and asked him to eat with them. Unfortunately Jay did not manage to disagree. They were all laughing at him and were waiting for him to eat and it took him sometime before he dug in and got a spoonful. And, he also gave his crew their share.
Thousands of the Filipinos were dwelling on the streets that were made of cartons. Many are also begging on the streets as we can see in Quiapo and other places here in Manila. They have dirty feet and their homes were built from garbage. They also gather their food in the garbage.
Pier 18 Tondo Manila is the biggest dumpsite in the Philippines. It replaced the Smokey Mountain after it had been closed. 500 “tambakeros” were there, and half of them were children. Few of them were voluntarily helping their parents. One of them was Jessie. He was called “putol” or maimed, because his hand was cut. It’s been his 3 years as a “tambakero” and he was used of working. He said he can have some money in the garbage.
One of the young scavengers had already died. His name is Jr. He worked there to help his family. He was earning 300-500 a day, and he was ignoring the tiredness just to earn, but unfortunately, his work became the reason for his death. He was crushed by bulldozer.
Some of the scavengers are using illegal drugs. Some say that being a scavenger is the worst child labor because they were exposed to dirt and chemicals. One of them had reach the age 50 in the garbage-life. One can say that in this place, all the ill things are here. Most of them have perseverance and industrious, because if not they won’t persist in gathering garbage. They are struggling for garbage.
Jay Taruc, a newscaster did a bit of role-playing during the production of “Basurero”. He played the part of the scavenger and he spent two hours in the dumpsite looking for plastic bottles and cans. He was been wounded because of garbage cans, but he only earned P6 for a basket full of trash.
Poverty is the topmost problem in our country of all time. It is said to be widely spread especially nowadays in urban cities such as; Quezon City and other areas of Metro Manila. Jay Taruc's “Basurero” unraveled the depressing situation of many Filipinos who feed on leftover food, now called “Batchoy”. This documentary merely emphasized the effect of the poverty in every family. It made them much more willing to do anything, everything in order to find some resources of food and shelters-even in dump sites without thinking the effects to their health and lives.
All the people live in dump site have one interest and work which is “pagbabasura/basurero”. They depend their meals and needs in garbage, but the most critical situation of the scavenger’s are the exposure in different diseases and contaminated materials that brought diseases like; skin disease, respiratory illness, etc.
Commentaries:
After I ate in fast food restaurants, I think they would have been thrown away and discarded for good. But after I watched the documentation, I realized that whatever that can be eaten will be eaten. It is the law of nature. It may be harsh but it is the reality. Pagpag is an essential survival food in the poorest slums of Metro Manila. No matter if it is already spoiled, the empty stomachs will still appreciate it.

“Sa Tuna at Ginhawa”

“Sa Tuna at Ginhawa”
Hosted and written by: Sandra Aguinaldo
Directed by: Marilen Go
Characters:
·       Donie – regular buyer in a store where fishermen buy on credit.
·       Rosalie – pregnant wife of Donnie.
·       Jerry – captain of the ship.
·       Amy – wife of Jerry who is doing business to provide additional earnings to their family.
·       Nonoy – had been gone for almost a week and his family had no longer food to eat.
·       Danny – a fisherman in his young age; his father is also a fisherman.
Synopsis:
“Sa Tuna at Ginhawa” reflects the story of many Filipinos in poverty who work hard but do not have enough salary. In Infanta, Quezon, most of the occupation of the residents is fishing. Fishermen are risking their lives just to earn money. From the seashore, they can see the Pacific Ocean where they go fishing.
One of the fishermen is Donnie. He is a regular customer in a store wherein fishermen buy on credit. He had all the attention of Rosalie every time he comes back. Usually, they were gone for almost one week.
Nonoy who is also a fisherman bought food for his pregnant wife and children before he took his journey in the sea. He had been frequently returning in Pacific Ocean because they don’t know any other way of living.
Jerry is the captain of the ship. His wife, Amy, is preparing his baggage before he left. Amy is already used of it because his father and brother were also fishermen. As the fishermen would take their journey, they cannot assure if they would return in good condition.
Only seven persons can be accommodated in the boat, they need to rent another boat where they can place their things.
Their relatives were waiting for their return. They all gathered. The children were crying. The travelers have their dreams as their strength.
Those who were left were just basing the conditions of their love one on the movement of the wind.
Rosalie was just trying to ignore. Nanay Lily, who acts as the mother in their place, was staying on the shore. Her husband is also in the middle sea.
The fishermen waited the night to pass. They even work as a carrier when they don’t have plenty of catch. They stop indulging in sentiment when the dinner was prepared.
Pacific Ocean is the widest sea. Magellan named it Pacifico which means calm, but it’s contrary to what is perceived by the eyes. They went to the coral reefs where the fishes dwell. They began to stretch their bones. They were not able to carry and support the weight of the fishes.
One of the fishermen said that he will let his children study only if they are willing. There is merriment for a while, but then action proceeds. Fortunately, their luck had come. They caught big fishes; 2 tuna in 2 separate hooks and a swordfish. They slept early, but suddenly, it rains. They depart in their voyage. They were disturbed when a boat submerged which accommodate the staffs of I-witness. The fishermen are like sardines as they sleep. Donnie doesn’t have a catch yet, but the only thing who’s making him happy is his family. He was working as baggage carrier. His only daughter who was studying doesn’t want to go to school sometimes. She wanted to buy toys for them. She cried. And Sandra Aguinaldo didn’t know how to comfort a child who’s crying because of poverty.
Amy, the wife of Jerry, was selling cell phone load, beauty products as an additional earnings for her family, and it’s also her pastime when her husband was still away. Their return is like good news. They caught 15 tuna. And the male tuna costs higher than female tuna, because it has a firmer meat. But as we all know tuna has a high price either male or female. Most fishermen are being outsmarted by buyers. Danny had caught 50-kg tuna which is the biggest caught. Fishermen oftentimes bear the loss. When fishes cost high in the market, it costs 300. But they only gave him 3000 for 50 kg? It costs 280 per kg. He won’t earn 30% of the gain because he did not contribute to the boat. It’s almost a week that Nonoy had not returned. The fishermen who already returned were celebrating because they came back with a caught. They took long in the midsea because the weather was unfavorable. The worry of their love ones subsides. They were paid 8,3000 for 10 tunas. The tuna they difficultly caught were not tasted by their families. It falls in the hands of the exporters who will bring this tuna to other countries.
Commentaries:
After I watched the documentation by Sandra Aguinaldo, I realized that we should be thankful in the status in life that we have and we should be contented and aim for the best in our life. Everything has a purpose and whatever happens to our lives, God has a reason. We should not ask for the things that we do not need, the important is we are safe and we live with a healthy life with our family.

Beauty Queen Never Quit

Have you ever been tried joining beauty pageants? Smiling in front of so many people, preparing your gown, practicing your talent, borrowing your costume, buying make-ups, finding heels, borrowing accessories and a lot more to think… Oh... I miss all that. Actually, I want to be a Beauty Queen. But that’s not so easy dream. I need to spend money and to spend time. But for a student like me and not a rich child, it’s very hard.

When I was in High School, I joined different beauty pageants. The first time I joined was so memorable. I was smiling for two hours and luckily, I was able to rich the finals. I’m just second year high school that time and we were aiming of the crown for Ms. Payatas High School 2006. In God’s will, I lost. But, I never feel anything wrong in me. In the backstage, I was still smiling, opposite to the other contestants’ emotion. I didn’t notice it. Until I find myself smiling. I really enjoyed the pageant.

The second beauty pageant that I joined was the Ms. Student Technologist and Entrepreneurs of the Philippines 2007. Out of 43 Contestants in our school, I won the Crown. I represent our school in the District Competition held at Commonwealth High School, Quezon City. But, unfortunately, after the pageant, they announced that I WAS DISQUALIFIED BECAUSE I WAS LATE. I walked out. I cried. And, I will never ever forget that experience. They should announce it earlier at least I was not expecting. I ramped, I questioned, and I did all my best to cover up my mistake but it leads to nothing. Everything is USELESS.

After that worst scenario happened to me, to our school, I told myself not to join beauty pageants again. But, I broke it. I joined again. My adviser and my classmates wanted me to be their representative for the Ms. Senior in the Search for Ms. Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma High School 2007 (Formerly Payatas High School). There should be one representative every section and those representatives will compete to know who will be the senior representatives. There will be two winners. Luckily, I was qualified. I also represent the senior students. But, again, I lost. I cried again but I never walked out. All my classmates was there, shouting for my name, they were the one who owned most of the things  I used in the contest, they were the one I dedicated all the things I’ve done. But, for the second time, binigo ko na naman sila. But, I never hear anything from them. They hug me. They cheer me. They are there. And that’s enough for me. Anyway, I won the special award, Ms. Congeniality.

I also joined 2009 Filipina Beauty at SM Fairview Annex. I find it very hard. I don’t have enough money. I have no supporters. Just all I have is me. But, I survive. Not because I won, because I was lost. I survive because I never quit. I finished what I started. I gained more self-confidence and more friends.

Lastly, I joined Ms. Psychological Society 2010. I lost. But, it’s okay. I didn’t understand the question in the Q and A. So, I have nothing to expect. But, I received the award for Best in Talent, I was shocked. It was unexpected. My talent was impromptu. I forgot my declamation piece. I have no choice but to act and do anything in front of the big crowd. That’s the best award I’ve ever received. No preparation but well appreciated.

Now, did you get something from my story? Joining beauty pageants is not so easy. But everything is easy for those who believe in themselves. If there is anything bothering you to become a Beauty Queen, STOP AND THINK, nothing is impossible for those believers. Just believe in yourself.

Winners never quit. Quitters never win.
